If you knew me in early middle school, I rollerbladed everywhere. I was honestly a bit addicted to going up and down my hill of a driveway and around our cul-de-sac. I had just moved towns, and spent a lot of my time bouncing a basketball (while roller blading) and riding past the hoop as fast as I could while tossing the ball in. I felt like I had invented a new sport and I was out there almost every day. Obviously, a simpler time for me, but it brought me some solace in my anxieties about moving to a new town. My little sister and I would stack brooms from the garage and I would do mini jumps over them – which I actually did once over a sewer with a couple of my friends in the neighborhood, leaving a scar on my left knee.
Skates are the Rollerblade Macroblade, T-shirt is an older version of this Old Navy pocket tee. To be honest, these shorts are an all time favorite of mine – I wear them to work, around the house, all summer long. They are wicked comfy! I have them in four colors! The helmet was an awesome Amazon find – obviously, I love the pink. Lastly, the mask hanging around my wrist is from Etsy – Paige, who makes the masks, is from my home town and does an amazing job. They are truly my #1 favorite – comfy, cute and full coverage!
Over the years, I haven’t really rollerbladed much even though I knew I would enjoy it. It wasn’t really a “cool” thing to do. However, whenever we go ice skating, I realize I’m actually pretty good at it. It feels just like roller blading – I can go really fast, do small jumps, a few tricks backwards. It’s all stuff I taught myself when I was younger, but it feels just like riding a bike again after years of being off it. You fall right back into it!
Well, a couple years ago, Jake got me rollerblades because he knew how much I missed it. I’ll be honest: I didn’t use them because I wasn’t sure where to use them, although I really really wanted them. Recently, I realized how badly I wanted to use them, and I headed to the park to try them out. Almost instantly, I was blading around the park trying to go as I could.
Since then? I’m addicted all over again. It’s a great work out because, for me, it’s all about speed and tricks, which gets me moving and using a lot of leg power. It’s such a great feeling to get back to it and it’s been a fun thing to do in the afternoons during the summer. I know I probably won’t be able to do it again as much once school starts, but I’m happy to have re-found my love for rollerblading. I definitely won’t go as long next time! Maybe I need to bring that basketball out again too! 🙂 Although I’m sure my Mom wants me investing in knee pads soon to prevent another one of those scars…!
