The Coney Island Tradition

My friend Molly and I have been close since we were in sixth grade. She happens to live in Brooklyn, which was so perfect for the two of us to always have that go-to best friend from home all through college. Last summer, while I was working in the city, we decided we wanted to have a sleepover (lol) and then take the train to Coney Island for a day on the beach. I had been to Coney Island before but, ironically, not in the summer. That morning, Jake, Molly and I headed for the subway and started making our way to the beach. Unfortunately, we accidentally got on the wrong subway, and ended up heading to the Bronx. Multiple 4 and 5 trains later (as we also stopped at Molly’s apartment in Brooklyn on the way….) we finally made it to Coney. We spent about a half hour waiting in line for Nathan’s hot dogs, were hot as hell, and we were all thinking “why did we do this again?”

Photos from last summer at Coney Island with Jake and Molly (Before I was regularly blogging!) I also included a video Jake caught of Molly fixing my hair for the photo – classic best friend move! 😉

Fast forward to eating hot dogs, and laying on the beach, and we ended up staying until sundown. I’m so lucky that Molly and Jake are such good friends, as the three of us were literally laughing the rest of the afternoon. We all knew we wanted to make a trip this year and, even better, Molly’s boyfriend Penn was now back on the East Coast after living in Texas! It was nice to have Jake and him hanging out together. We spent Friday night at Molly’s, catching up and having a good time, and then were off to Coney the next morning. Naturally, we had a bit of a late start, but needed to stop at this awesome bagel place in Crown Heights called Bagel Pub, which was delish. NY bagels are obviously the best bagels. Penn would recommend the ham, egg and cheese sandwich over anything on the menu (not my thing – I’m a poppy seed toasted with butter kind of girl!) but I had a bite of Jake’s everything bagel and, oh my god, I know what I am getting next time!

This was shortly after reenacting our handshake from 8th grade! Striped yellow tee is old J. Crew – as far at striped tees with a small graphic design, I also have this adorable pineapple one from J. Crew Factory – plus, it’s 20% off today with the code ‘FORREAL’ ! You can see me wearing it here

Anyway, we finally made it to Coney, had our famous Nathan’s hot dogs, and had a relaxing day laying by the ocean. Coney is such a classic New York experience, I highly recommend taking a subway ride there if you’re staying in the city. We’re hoping to make this a yearly tradition, and I can’t wait for the next time the four of us have a weekend together!

What’s your favorite beach to go to in the summer?
