I think blogging has become overtly popular over the last decade. I mean, popular is probably an understatement. And why shouldn’t it be popular? It gives a voice to the voiceless, has the ability to potentially provide an outlet for both the writer and reader, and has basically changed the entirety of the media game. I think what originally prompted me to blog was reading other blogs through college – Kelly in the City and Mommyshorts (Ilana Wiles) were my original favorites, and still are. I expanded a bit over the years – I’m a huge fan of Lemon Stripes, Brooklyn Blonde, Carly the Prepster, and The Stripe. I continue to bounce around articles I find through Instagram, being “influenced” pretty much on the daily at this point.
The original draw to blogging, for me, was to write about clothes. I love fashion so much – before teaching, I really thought I wanted to do something with media and fashion (I was a media communications major at NYU…), but was always a bit intimidated by “high fashion.” I idolized Jenna Lyons, J.Crew’s former creative director and president. I loved the fun choices she was making for the brand and thought, at the time, they were doing an incredible job with their media team. They made videos of making their shoes in Italy, spouted hilarious jokes on twitter, and started giving styling tips on their website. Seems like the norm now, but they literally taught me 4 different ways to style a scarf when I was a sophomore in college.
Coat is J.Crew – absolute classic. I wish they still had this color but they have so many other lovely ones! Sweater underneath is by L.L. Bean – same deal, this color isn’t around but they have two lovely colors. Jeans are Gap and sneaks are my super comfy Allbirds! (Full Review here)
But then, blogging truly came to be. Like, big time. Influencing sprung about in a whole new way, and bloggers were showcasing items that had a range of price ranges – from Old Navy to the Gucci (I mean, I’ve seen the Gucci belt all over the place in the last year, and I place part of the audience desire for it on bloggers!) So sure, I sort of want a Chanel bag and some Gucci loafers, that’d be pretty cool. Probably not gunna happen, but it’s hard in this industry to not to have high end items we eye! But, truthfully, most of my fashion choices never came from luxury brands – but I’ve always maintained that, I like to keep things simple, classic and quality made.
The part of the blogger world that I’ve always found fun, is to read from other bloggers all the other “stuff” mixed into their posts. For example, I was thrilled for Kelly Larkin when I read she was having her second baby (Lucy..!) and I just love following along with Carly’s decisions for her new house. It’s fun, relatable and, at times, even self motivating. I’ve tried to incorporate my own personal stories into the blog, while always noting fashion choices or reviewing items. But, over the last two years, I’ve realized it’s been such a wonderful thing for me to look back on. Blogging has been good for me. I’ve gotten to the point where I’m super proud of the blog. I try to put research into clothes I feature, while also always letting you guys know what’s going on! But it’s also given me a creative outlet where I can write about what I love and who I love!
Thank you for always following along! What are you looking to read this year on The Minty Pink?
